Why Yamakujira?

Why Yamakujira?

Of wild animal bones found in archaeological digs of human settlements in the Jomon period, wild boar bones are second only to deer bones in number. This tells us that the Jomon most likely had many encounters with boar, and found them and the deer, to be very good eating. In the late Edo period the eating of meat, other than fish, was essentially banned for religious purposes. However as whales were considered a large fish, wild boar meat was sold by many establishments as 'yama-kujira' (mountain whale) due to it's similar color and texture. While the wild boar of the Boso Peninsula were pushed to near extinction by the 1970's, in recent years the population has skyrocketed. A drive through the local Wada-cho roads at dusk is often enough to see at least a few of the new locals.

Wada-cho is now one of only 4 remaining whaling villages in Japan

Whale meat has historically been a part of the Japanese diet since the Jomon period, however commercial whaling in Wada-cho traces its beginnings to the Edo period. By the time of the Meiji period, whaling was in decline worldwide as whale populations plummeted and demand for whale products waned. But in post war Japan whale meat was still an extremely valuable source of protein, and consumption rose accordingly. This period was the peak of whaling in Japan, after which the industry went into decline.

For better or for worse, Wada-cho, the whales, and wild boar, are still intertwined.
